    Forget Wall Street – it was a semi in Hounslow, a warehouse in Derbyshire and a boardroom in Wolfsburg that provided some of 2015’s biggest shocks
    Despite topping 7000 for the first time in its history, the blue-chip FTSE 100 index finished down in 2016. Still, perhaps more damaging to the fragile self-esteem in testosterone-filled boardrooms was the make-up of one particular group of five FTSE 100 chief executives that did seem to do well.

    The five big firms run by women – Véronique Laury at Kingfisher, Liv Garfield at Severn Trent, Moya Greene of Royal Mail, Alison Cooper at Imperial Tobacco and Carolyn McCall at easyJet – all outperformed the market in 2016. Only Kingfisher lost investors money, but still did better than the market as a whole.
